For some of you, the decision as to whether or not the new Mercedes SLR McLaren is worth ponying up the roughly half-a-million or so it takes to get behind its ergonomic sport steering wheel is a difficult one. It’s without quesion a vehicle of immense beauty, but then again, $500,000 affords you plenty of things which are immensely beautiful. So the question lingers: why should you purchase the Mercedes SLR McLaren Roadster? If Mercedes’ newest press release is to be believed, the answer to that question my dear friends, is safety. Thanks to its F1-style carbon-fiber monocoque construction, in the event of a head-on, side-on or rear-end collision, its occupants enjoy ‘a very rigid and hence securely protected space…’

Going through our inbox this morning, an anonymous reader tipped us off to a new animation appearing on Mercedes’ AMG website – one which depicts the above-shown vehicle along with a message stating ‘In July… the fog lifts.’ As for what model is making its debut, that we cannot say, although the grainy vehicle in question does bear a striking resemblance to the SLK-Class. To kick things off this sultry June morning comes news that the Mercedes-Benz Actros recently celebrated a momentous milestone, with the 500,000th unit rolling off the assembly plant in Worth on Friday. On hand for the event was the recipient of the milestone vehicle, Herve Street, president of the French shipping company StarÂ’s Service, as well as Hubertus Troska, head of Mercedes-Benz Trucks (Europe/Latin America) and Ulrich Bastert, head of Mercedes-Benz Trucks Sales and Marketing.

I’m taking this all with a grain of salt, but according to the fine gentlemen over at Winding Road, pictured before you is a test mule for Mercedes forthcoming Audi R8-slayer, dubbed the SLC. If the rumors are to be believed, the SLC (which will be built by the German company HWA) is set to be powered by AMG’s 6.2-Liter V8, and will be based on the next-generation SL platform. As a result, a front-engine design is expected along with a non-retractable carbon fiber roof.
In awards news, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently awarded head of Mercedes’ passenger car safety development Dr. Rodolfo Schoneburg with the ‘U.S. Government Award for Safety Engineering Excellence.’ The award, which is bestowed every two years on the occasion of the Technical Conference on the Enhanced Safety of Vehicles (ESV), was presented by the U.S. governement in recognition of the outstanding contribution Rodolfo has made to the field of automotive safety
Those of you wishing to be the first among the general population to witness firsthand Mercedes’ new SLR convertible, mark your calendars. This weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, the supercar will make its public debut, finally showcasing to the world what a SLR sans top looks like.
